SUPPORT Los Angeles Unified School District Measure Y (School Construction & Repair Bonds). Safe, modern and uncrowded schools remain vital to the educational achievement of our children – a core Jewish value. PJA therefore supports the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Measure Y on the November 8, 2005, special election ballot. This measure authorizes the LAUSD to issue and sell $3.895 billion in bonds for the purpose of building and improving schools within the District. Over $1.6 billion of the proceeds from these bond sales will be used to construct new neighborhood schools, reduce the size of all middle schools to no more than 2,000 students and eliminate the disruptive year-round school calendar by returning all schools to the traditional nine-month calendar. An additional $1.48 billion of these proceeds will be used to repair existing schools, including completing the removal of hazardous asbestos, installing and upgrading security and fire alarm systems, air conditioning currently non-air conditioned buildings, etc. In addition to the LAUSD’s own annual performance and financial audit of the programs being funded by these bonds, all expenditures are subject to the review and oversight of the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee. PJA urges all those living in the Los Angeles Unified School District to support this important bond measure.
